Sweet scent of cinnamon, spices and cloves Sun going low Late evening glow Sky fading tangerine dips into mauve Heavy clouds promising snow Tinsel of silver and baubles of gold Turn the lights low Put on a show Dance with the lost ones, the young and the old Joy soon follows in tow Dance with the strangers on Solstice-Eve night Let them all know It's somewhere to go Home as the season tips into light Tie up the gifts in a bow

Took it off the hook at the back of the wardrobe Ah! My winter coat still fits Big and thick and warm and plush as bathrobe Think I’ll top it off, hat, scarf and mits What’s this in the pockets? Crumpled paper scraps Ah! Some old songs I wrote Then quickly abandoned, sensing a trap Shoved them in my pockets and promptly forgot Howl them at the moon, just howl them at the moon Those old abandoned songs That only come out one time of year When the days are short and the nights are long And my winter coat is on Stepping into snow drift outside my den Ah! The coat is needed Find a little food then back home again Berries on the trees with ice are beaded Howl them at the moon, just howl them at the moon Those old abandoned songs That only come out one time of year When the days are short and the nights are long And my winter coat is on When the sun was king A perfect regal star I boldly caught some rays In my mason jar Then I sewed them in the lining of my winter coat So when all around is cold I would be warm And the winter songs so dread and old Won’t sound so terribly cold So howl them at the moon, just howl them at the moon Those old abandoned songs That only come out one time of year When the days are short and the nights are long And my winter coat is on

Survive 04:05
In our little nest high up in the sky Over winter we survive So that in summer we may thrive In our little nest high up in the sky From time to time a storm Rattles timbers, batters eaves Wind whistles its song Accented by flying leaves Though the winter’s raging Blowing howling shaking panes It’s not our war it’s waging No, not ever again In our little nest way up in the sky Over winter we survive Now and then a crash Of broken glass on concrete The animals may clash Down there on the street Though the wild life are so fierce Shouting, cursing outside the pubs Here we are safe from their jeers Warm and happy in our hub [improvised rounds over outro]: In our nest way up in the sky Over winter we survive So that in summer we may thrive In our nest way up in the sky Over winter we survive So that in summer we may thrive In our nest way up in the sky

Put down the eggnog please Mum Honey dim the lights and get the gun Something strange is looking in the window Drawn no doubt by the festive glow An elongated body, pointy ears Bulbous eyes projecting eldritch fears But the sad smile upon the strangeling's face Reminds me of this long forgotten phrase: If you’re cold, then they’re cold too So bring them inside There’s room enough by your hearth For all to bide If you’re cold, then they’re cold too So bring them inside There’s room enough by your hearth For all to bide Dad was doubtful of this course of action With Auntie Anne he quickly formed a faction But honey you and I will side with Mum Open up the French windows and in you come The poor old creature was near frozen No sooner in the armchair dozin' Than a gang of ogres came into view In the garden, so we did what we had to do: If you’re cold, then they’re cold too So bring them inside There’s room enough by your hearth For all to bide If you’re cold, then they’re cold too So bring them inside There’s room enough by your hearth For all to bide That little voice on the radio Says bring 'em in, those poor poor things I may have misremembered slightly For my house is getting fuller nightly Barely room for the dragon to spread her wings If you’re cold, then they’re cold too So bring them inside There’s room enough by your hearth For all to bide If you’re cold, then they’re cold too So bring them inside There’s room enough by your hearth For all to bide There’s room enough by your hearth For all to bide

The day has come, the season has turned It's time you made your bed Fill up on fuel, slow down and cool And rest your weary little head Winter is the coldest time of year Food so scarce and weather so cruel But you’re nobody’s fool Millennia of change have led you here Your bed of leaves and twigs is nearly done Food so scarce and weather so harsh The hedgerow’s like a marsh As rain and snow clouds cover up the sun The day has come, the season has turned It's time you made your bed Fill up on fuel, slow down and cool And rest your weary little head Winter is the barest time of year Food so scarce and weather so wild When once again it’s mild You’ll be back for summer time is here Now you’re full and ready for your rest Food so scarce and weather shut out The rain runs down the spout But you won’t notice cosy in your nest The day has come, the season has turned It's time you made your bed Fill up on fuel, slow down and cool And rest your weary little head Sleep little ones, sleep and more Find your centre, find your core Hibernation is the door From winter into spring Sleep little ones, sleep so deep May the goddess bless and keep Til the springtime birdies cheep Abroad and on the wing Winter is the leanest time of year

Hibernaculum 08:44

about

Winter is the leanest time of year. Some animals put on their winter coats, while some make refuges known as hibernacula. In these tents for winter quarter they slow down, cool and conserve energy to get through the bare months, full up on fuel they have gathered in the weeks leading up to winter. Human beings are animals too, and we have our own coping strategies to get through the cold and dark days in our lives. This album is offered by way of a prayer and a spell to guide us and our wild cousins through dark and troubled times and into the light
