My Winter Coat

from Hibernaculum by Lewis Mullen

/

lyrics

Took it off the hook at the back of the wardrobe
Ah! My winter coat still fits
Big and thick and warm and plush as bathrobe
Think I’ll top it off, hat, scarf and mits

What’s this in the pockets? Crumpled paper scraps
Ah! Some old songs I wrote
Then quickly abandoned, sensing a trap
Shoved them in my pockets and promptly forgot

Howl them at the moon, just howl them at the moon
Those old abandoned songs
That only come out one time of year
When the days are short and the nights are long
And my winter coat is on

Stepping into snow drift outside my den
Ah! The coat is needed
Find a little food then back home again
Berries on the trees with ice are beaded

Howl them at the moon, just howl them at the moon
Those old abandoned songs
That only come out one time of year
When the days are short and the nights are long
And my winter coat is on

When the sun was king
A perfect regal star
I boldly caught some rays
In my mason jar
Then I sewed them in the lining of my winter coat
So when all around is cold I would be warm
And the winter songs so dread and old
Won’t sound so terribly cold

So howl them at the moon, just howl them at the moon
Those old abandoned songs
That only come out one time of year
When the days are short and the nights are long
And my winter coat is on
