Monuments & Ruins

by Lewis Mullen

Raise the flag and fire the cannon Process down the closed off streets Sing songs of a super strong nation Sounds more like a crying shame Colonisers on pedestals On streets named after slavers Don’t tell me this is a museum Looks more like a hall of fame Down down down Tear em down Tear em all down Heave ho and throw em in the sea Down down down Tear em down Tear em all down Heave ho and throw em in the sea Down down down Tear em down Tear em all down Heave ho and throw em in the sea Held doors in endless corridors Followed up with a wandering hand For the sake of your livelihood Better not be kissed and tell Non silence breaks the violence Childhood heroes fall like cards Favourite author’s got a hit out on me And all of my friends as well so Down down down Tear em down Tear em all down Heave ho and throw em in the sea Singing Down down down Tear em down Tear em all down Heave ho and throw em in the sea

Thorn 01:41
Nadders in the long grass Told me to beware Of traitors among us And strangers over there Mine’s a quart sire The bread a little moldy Man of the men folk Crying out with ye olde and in with Thorn! Our signs it will adorn Thorn! The never-was reborn My passport’s blue How about you? Nothing to go and nowhere to do My passport’s blue How about you? You can’t stay here but you can’t go through Chopping up my coinage To put ‘em in their places Pre-decimate our noses To spite our faces, all for the love of Thorn! Beloved dust reborn Thorn! The sheep so keenly shorn Thorn!

Tear Me Down 02:33
My leg ‘pon the workbench My hands work fleetly My spleen ont’ slab Humming sweetly Lab door’s locked None disturb me Angels outside Cannot curb me Tear me down To build me up again I should pray For stranger weather Weigh my art Against a feather Lab door’s jammed None can free me Birds outside Barely see me Tear me down To build me up again Tear me down To build me up again

about

Monuments & Ruins is a short sharp shock and a snapshot of what's been bubbling around in my brain jar for the past few years. Scary stuff. But not nearly as scary as real life. What can art do? What can folksy homemade punk do? What would Pussy Riot do? (you'll have to ask Jeffrey Lewis for that one) I don't know the answers, but it felt good to slip the dog leash and run ragged around the park for a while. Enjoy!

about

Lewis Mullen Glasgow, UK

I write the kind of music I'd like to listen to, and I hope you enjoy listening to it to. It's a window into a slightly different world that's a more honest mirror of our own
