about

After a decade of austerity, working class people in Britain are still paying the price, with young people, women and ethnic minorities particularly badly hit. This song is a window into a young couple's struggles beneath the breadline. But on the plus side I play it on the ukulele to counterbalance the heaviness of the subject matter.

lyrics

Skin and bone, born of Maggie's blight
I was born, no silver spoon in sight
All alone until one fateful night
Two skinny boys, jeans and money tight

The scraps that we've been thrown
The clothes that we've outgrown
Austerity's no match for skin and bone
Skin and bone
Skin and bone
Skin and bone

Skin and bone, skipping for a crust
Hunger makes you do just as you must
High Street's full of broken slabs and rust
Once again, the suits abuse our trust

The punches we've been thrown
The lives that we've outgrown
Bad luck is no match for skin and bone
Skin and bone
Skin and bone
Skin and bone

We are the forgotten ones, Skin and bone and me
Crushed beneath a million tonnes of rich men's history

Skin and bone, baying at the moon
I was born, without a silver spoon
All alone until I met my loon
Top floor, tiny attic room

The scraps that we've been thrown
The clothes that we've outgrown
Austerity's no match for skin and bone
Skin and bone
Skin and bone
Skin and bone
Uh oh
