Natural Love

from Lost in the Woods by Lewis Mullen

/

about

Written and recorded in 2017

Another earnest love song, but with a different tone from the Time Machine one. I was aiming to show how the love of one couple can be a microcosm for a whole community: whether the LGBTQ+ community I'm part of or any other which has historically and currently lived on the fringes

Some of the lyrics I might rework if I were to play it now. "Our love is dispersing everywhere" has the potential to cause giggles where giggles are not intended. But I'm pleased I got in a shout out to the Fortingall Yew, which I'd visited on various holidays to Perthshire

I'm definitely going for a Stephin Merritt voice on this one

lyrics

Our love is natural as rainbows
Sunlight on the water in the air
Heavy rains have fallen down
Struggles have been fought and now
Our love is dispersing everywhere

Our love is rooted as the yew tree
Older than the church it grows beside
Stronger than the gale
Of hatred that wails
Through branches but cannot get inside

And your eyes are two gemstones in disguise
Glittering like stars in the sky
Through all the wrath and wrong
They sing their stellar song
Time and tide have only made them wise

Our love is genuine as birdsong
Tweeting tones of hope in times to come
No mob with flaming torches
Standing on our porches
Can strike our pretty little birdy dumb
For our love has only just begun

I write the kind of music I'd like to listen to, and I hope you enjoy listening to it to. It's a window into a slightly different world that's a more honest mirror of our own
