Hannah is Leaving (for the USA)

from May All Your Weeds Be Wildflowers by Lewis Mullen

/

about

One evening alone at my gig, I wondered where everyone was. It later turned out they were at a leaving party. This party took on epic proportions in my mind, and the scenario in this song is both a speculative fiction of this event, and a letter to a wonderful songwriter and human being whom I wish I could have gotten to know. The very much more imaginative spoken section is based on an idea suggested to me by another songwriter and friend, Ian Doran

lyrics

The trees are bald and the sky is grey
But we will sing until those crows fly away
The flowers have lost all their bouquet
'Cause Hannah is leaving
Leaving today

The fiddle plays an old strathspey
Beside the shutters of an all-night café
But soon the marching band will play
Hannah is leaving
Leaving today

So call up your boss and tell her you've got other plans
They just declared a national holiday
We'll miss her, wish her well and see her on her way
'Cause Hannah is leaving
For the USA

Along the Meadows and parkways
From the gloaming 'til the breaking of day
A fine au naturel soiree
'Cause Hannah is leaving
Leaving today

So call up your boss and tell her you've got other plans
They just declared a national holiday
We'll miss her, wish her well and see her on her way
'Cause Hannah is leaving
For the USA

Hi Hannah, it's me
I just wanted to say I'm sorry that I didn't even know what you think I should be
It was a bit of a hypocritical thing for me to get the train
Anyway it's all my fault for not getting back to you and your family
Well, now I hear that everyone is doing well and that is the best of luck
But now you're leaving
Leaving today

So call up your boss and tell her you've got other plans
They just declared a national holiday
We'll miss her, wish her well and see her on her way
'Cause Hannah is leaving
For the USA

And at the close of the ballet
Just before they light the fireworks display
We'll shake her hand and we'll say "Hey,
"Sorry you're leaving
"Leaving today"

Then handkerchiefs wave in dismay
So much more that we each wished to say
She was so kind we can't repay
And Hannah is leaving
Leaving today

She's gonna do so well
She's gonna do so well
She's gonna do so well
Lucky USA
