Dyspraxic Heart

from Is That You? by Lewis Mullen

/

about

Full disclosure: I’ve never been diagnosed with dyspraxia, but a lot of the descriptions of it sound uncannily like me. As a child I struggled to learn physical tasks that others took for granted, and still hardly a day goes by when I don’t spill a drink, drop something for no reason, or stub my toe on something that I know is there. All of the things in the song happened and I hope that they are relatable

lyrics

Childhood is a skinned knee
And growing up’s a bastard
But falling in love is like riding a bike
A skill I’ve never mastered
I wish I could go faster

Maybe they’re leaving off picking me
To save the best ‘til last
As long as nobody’s kicking me
For getting nowhere fast
And letting the ball go past

I’ve got a big dyspraxic heart
Drop it and it falls apart
I’ve got a big dyspraxic heart
Don’t know how to make it stop

So here’s where I’m coming from
And I hope enough to go on
No longer running from
The nothing left by no-one
That I went and stubbed my toe on

I’ve got a big dyspraxic heart
Drop it and it falls apart
I’ve got a big dyspraxic heart
Don’t know how to make it stop

Spoke too soon
A spoke too soon
Caught my foot in
Upending the bicycle
All in a pile
A spoke too soon

Let’s go climb a tree
And fall and rip our jackets
Try and lose some shuttlecocks
In the rafters with our rackets
So they’ll send us some new packets

I’ve got a big dyspraxic heart
Drop it and it falls apart
I’ve got a big dyspraxic heart
Don’t know how to make it stop
I’ve got a big dyspraxic heart
Someday I’ll learn to make it go
