Coldingham Bay

from Is That You? by Lewis Mullen

about

There’s a glaring lack of Scottish surf songs, and this is my attempt to redress this imbalance. The song contains names of places in Scotland where surfing does take place. Wetsuits are required given the North Sea temperatures, and this gave me an idea to weave in some North East Scotland mythology to my song of summer love

lyrics

My heart was in my mouth
Could not believe my eyes
On Coldingham Bay
I met this guy

Just down from Thurso
He tracked the moontides
On a cold July day
Around noon tide

We chatted for a while
Of breakers and the broke
Of lovely Saint Abbs
Approvingly we spoke

Then he handed me his beer
And with a cheeky grin
Suddenly stepped back into
His slick black shiny skin

Man on dry land
Silkie on the sea
Footprints on the ocean
Run in slow motion

Overhead they danced
The swoop and the cry
On Coldingham Bay
I watched this guy

Up and down he went
Silkie on the waves
Those great big monsters
He must have been so brave

Man on dry land
Silkie on the sea
Footprints on the ocean
Run in slow motion

It seemed like no time
It seemed like all time
Hope he will be here still
Come the fall time

When he had had enough
He stepped back on the sand
Shed his dripping suit
I took his human hand

I won’t forget
That crimson evening sky
When on Coldingham Bay
I met this guy
